Lahaina's Front Street in 2026

Almost three years after the fire, Front Street carries traffic again. Here is what the County reopened, what is still fenced, and how to pass through as a respectful guest.

On August 8, 2023, a wildfire destroyed most of historic Lahaina. At least 102 people died. Front Street, the oceanfront heart of the old town, stayed closed through the cleanup and the first years of rebuilding.

On August 1, 2026 it reopened to vehicles. This post sums up what the County of Maui announced, what is still closed as of October 2026, and what it means if you're staying in West Maui.

The quick answer

Front Street has been open to traffic from Papalaua Street to Shaw Street since August 1, 2026, with no regularly restricted hours, and Dickenson and Prison streets reopened too. Market Street, Papelekane Street and Mokuhinia Place stay closed while the State dredges Lahaina Harbor. The banyan tree is fenced off, and the county arborist committee chair expects another two years of healing. Stay off private property and out of fenced areas, and treat the burn zone as a place of loss, not a sight.

Is Front Street in Lahaina open in 2026?

Yes. Since August 1, 2026, Front Street is open to vehicles from Papalaua Street to Shaw Street, with no regularly restricted hours.

The County of Maui Office of Recovery announced the date in July. Before it could reopen, crews removed wildfire debris and old offshore pilings, repaired the seawall and sidewalk, put up new railings and planted trees on the ocean side, fenced the mountain side and the off-limit areas, and repaved and restriped the road. Until then, the stretch from Dickenson to Shaw had been open only from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the small boat harbor.

Mayor Richard Bissen called it "another important step in Lahaina's healing journey", Maui Now reported. It is a road reopening: the mountain side of the street is still fenced.

Which businesses are back on Front Street?

Only a few so far. The mayor called the reopening the return of commercial activity, but the big names are still months or years away.

The County's announcement named the ʻUlu o Lele Marketplace, Kimo's restaurant and more than a dozen other businesses as moving forward. ʻUlu o Lele is an interim marketplace on the former Outlets of Maui site, organised by the Hawaiian Council: about 3 acres, expected to take 25 to 50 local vendors, with priority for businesses hit by the fire or connected to Lahaina. Vendor applications closed on September 28, 2026.

Kimo's will come back in a new Front Street location, the old Chan Wa Building, which developers are redeveloping, and Jackie Reed, CEO of its parent company, hopes to be serving again in two to three years, Hawaii Public Radio reported in July 2026. Before you drive in for a meal, check the business's own page.

Can you visit the Lahaina banyan tree?

You can see it from the street, but Banyan Court Park stays fenced off. The chair of the county arborist committee expects about two more years of healing.

The banyan was planted on April 24, 1873. It survived the fire, though the heat damaged it badly. After an assessment in May 2026, the chair of the Maui County Arborist Committee, Duane Sparkman, said: "It's going to be two years of healing still for that tree." The worry is borer beetles getting into the heartwood, which could make the tree unsafe for people underneath, Aloha State Daily reported.

Look from the sidewalk, don't lean on the fence, and keep it short and quiet.

Is Lahaina Harbor open?

Yes, for permitted boat operators in daylight. The State is dredging the harbor through about the end of 2026, and commercial trips carry on.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources started dredging on June 1, 2026, the first dredging of the harbor basin since 1966, and expects to finish in December. It says permitted commercial operations continue without interruption and no facility closures are anticipated. The County's harbor access page lists pier access from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and asks harbor visitors to park in the free three-hour County lot at 116 Prison Street, from where tour operators escort them to the harbor.

The State's Lahaina recovery page tracks the timeline for rebuilding the rest of the harbor. If your boat trip leaves from Lahaina, confirm the meeting point with the operator. The sunset dinner sail on this site leaves from Ka'anapali Beach instead.

How should visitors behave in Lahaina now?

Drive through, stop where businesses welcome you, and treat everything else as people's homes and a place of loss.

  • Stay off private property and out of fenced areas, as the County asks.
  • Don't photograph burned lots, rebuilding homes or residents.
  • Park only in marked lots, such as the County lots at 116 Prison Street and 500 Front Street.
  • Spend where you're welcome: reopened shops, food trucks and local operators.
  • Read local voices if you want to understand what happened, rather than going to look.
