On August 8, 2023, a wildfire destroyed most of historic Lahaina town. At least 102 people died, and 2,207 structures were destroyed.
Many visitors still ask whether they should come to West Maui, and how. This guide's answer: come thoughtfully, spend locally, and remember that the burn zone is a place of grief and of people's homes.
The quick answer
The Lahaina fire of August 8, 2023 killed at least 102 people and destroyed 2,207 structures. Rebuilding is ongoing: Maui County's 2024 plans put completion of the commercial district, infrastructure and housing at about six years. Treat the burn zone as a place of loss, not a sight; respect closures and posted signs; and spend with local businesses that are operating. The Lahaina ATV tour is based in Napili, outside the burned town.
What happened in Lahaina in August 2023?
On August 8, 2023, a wildfire destroyed most of historic Lahaina town; at least 102 people died and 2,207 structures were destroyed.
Before the fire, Front Street was the focal point of the Lahaina Historic District. The courthouse in Banyan Court Park was destroyed. The banyan tree beside it survived, and its canopy is recovering.
Is Lahaina being rebuilt?
Yes. Rebuilding is ongoing: in 2024 Maui County released plans to rebuild the commercial district, infrastructure and housing, with completion estimated at about six years.
One milestone came in 2026: the County of Maui Office of Recovery announced that Front Street would reopen to traffic from Papalaua Street to Shaw Street on August 1, 2026, with no regular restricted hours. Market Street, Papelekane Street and Mokuhinia Place were to stay closed for ongoing work, including the dredging of Lahaina Harbor. Expect more temporary closures while the commercial district is rebuilt.

Is it okay to visit West Maui?
Yes, when you visit thoughtfully: treat the burned town as a community recovering, not a destination.
Stay, eat and book where visitors are welcome, follow posted signs, and keep your plans flexible. If you are unsure whether a place is open to visitors, assume it is not and move on.
How should you behave near the burn zone?
Treat it as a place of loss and of people's homes: do not stop to sightsee, and do not photograph the ruins.
- Do not treat the burn zone as a sightseeing stop or a photo backdrop.
- Stay off private property and out of fenced-off areas, as the County asks.
- Respect closures and posted signs.
- If you want to understand what happened, read and listen to local voices rather than going to look.
Where is the Lahaina ATV tour, relative to the fire?
In Napili, north of Ka'anapali near Kapalua Airport: it uses a Lahaina postal address, but it is not in Lahaina town.
The meeting point is at 4900 Honoapiilani Highway; from there you turn onto Napilihau Street and look for the fenced yard just past the farmers market. Napili and Kapalua were never part of Lahaina town. The operator works with the Pu'u Kukui Watershed Preserve, and many guests mention planting a native tree, such as a koa, during the ride.

Spend with local businesses that are operating, choose local operators, and be patient with a community that is still rebuilding.
Pick locally run tours, restaurants and shops where you can, and treat the people serving you with kindness: many people in West Maui were affected by the fire. Respect for the place and its people goes further than any purchase.

What else is there to do in West Maui?
Head for the mountains and the ocean away from the burned town: an off-road tour above Kapalua, the Ka'anapali zipline, or a sunset sail from Ka'anapali Beach.
Each of these starts outside Lahaina town. Compare them in West Maui adventure tours compared.

A gentle evening on the water: two hours from Ka'anapali Beach at sunset, with dinner on board.
